AST 309--Time
Policy on Collaboration
I encourage students to work together on observing projects.
This includes the clock comparison project and all of the extra-credit
assignments. It does not include assignments that do not
involve taking and reducing data but which only involve using
the astrolabe, doing calculations, determining positions in the
solar system, etc. This is a convenience that can help you to
obtain better data and get better results. It will also introduce
you in a small way to scientific collaboration.
It is essential that certain policies be observed whenever you
are working with another student on a project.
You may work with only one other student. If you
work with more than one other student on the project, you will
get no credit for the assignment.
You may take data together. Both students must be present
when the data are taken, and both must contribute their share
to taking the data. This could mean that one takes data while
the other records, or it could mean that both take the same data
and they compare the data for better accuracy. How you do this
is up to you. You must describe your technique for sharing the
data collection task in your discussion of the project. Failure
to give an adequate description will result in points being
taken off.
You must each reduce your data and discuss you project independently.
This means that once you have your data, you are to do all
the calculations independently of the other person, and are to
write up your own interpretation of the experiment and conclusions.
You should not discuss the final results with each other. If there
is evidence that you have collaborated on the calculations and
discussion, you will get no credit for the assignment.
A signed copy of this statement must be included with each
assignment you turn in. If it is not included, the assignment
will not be graded.
I agree to these conditions, and have abided by them.
